Acquaintance with key concepts (morality, responsibility, justice, suffering, hope etc.) and ethical theories; in-depth knowledge of central questions, problems and aspects of an ethic of vulnerability and the ability to present these in written and oral form

"But when the buffalo went away the hearts of my people fell to the ground, and they could not lift them up again. After this nothing happened." This statement by the last great Crow chief, Plenty Coups, echoes a history of destruction that entailed a loss of modes of life and everyday practices along with the loss of settlement. According to Jonathan Lear, this form of aborted speech confronts us with profound ethical questions that we will address in this seminar: How can the collapse of culture be understood, how can it be narrated? What does it mean when previously held values and norms are no longer relevant? What practical virtues can be positioned against such an experience of loss? How can a future be imagined in spite of everything? We will explore these questions in a shared reading of the book Radical Hope. Ethics in the Face of Cultural Devastation (Suhrkamp).
