To introduce students to existing approaches in Internet research combining theoretical, epistemological and methodological aspects and issues, with an emphasis on Canadian work in this area.
The Internet has become an important environment for education, and for the creation and sharing of knowledge generally. Hence the systematic study of its many implications is an imperative for social research. This course will explore the nature of the Internet as a communication medium and social phenomenon by reviewing a range of epistemological perspectives that have yielded useful results. The goal of the course will be to introduce students to existing approaches in Internet research combining theoretical, methodological and ethical aspects and issues. These approaches will represent the whole range between large-scale quantitative studies of various dimensions of Internet penetration and use to qualitative research focusing on smaller scale phenomena and investigating them in great depth. Over the years, Internet research has evolved a set of methods specifically suited to studying the Internet in its dual articulation as offline resources and practices and online content and activities. The course will introduce some of the most interesting examples of successful research methodologies and findings. A special emphasis will be placed on Canadian contributions and achievements in this dynamic and growing field.
