The course aims at developing an understanding of democratic citizenship and how the respective competences are developed through non-formal education and learning. Specific learning objectives are: • To explore and understand concepts of citizenship in general and specifically of democratic citizenship, active citizenship and European citizenship; • To explore and understand the diversity of non-formal education within the spectrum between informal and formal education and learning; • To explore, reflect, analyse and understand concepts, principles, approaches, methodologies and methods of non-formal education and learning, in particular for developing democratic citizenship competences; • To recognise the value and potential of non-formal education for democratic citizenship as well as possibilities and opportunities of its implementation.
Education democratic citizenship and the promotion of active and European citizenship have been on the agenda of the European Union and of the Council of Europe since a number of years. But what are the underlying concepts of citizenship? How are democratic, active and European citizenship actually defined? Which competences do they require? And how are these competences developed, in particular outside the formal education system? These questions will be examined during this course, with a few at European as well as national levels. The scope of non-formal citizenship education models in the continuum between informal and formal education and learning will be explored and specific examples and practices will be analysed in more detail with respect to the underlying citizenship concepts, pedagogic approaches, framework, structures, methodologies, methods, quality, assessment etc.
Lectures, discussions, individual and group work, presentations. Assignments between lectures (individual and in small groups), e.g. research and analysis of educational activities for democratic citizenship, followed by presentation and discussion in the course; design of specific programmes and methods for education for democratic citizenship etc.
