summer semester 2025 | Last update: 18.12.2024 | Place course on memo listStudents can trace the historical development of the special needs education system in Austria and reflect critically on current developments. They are also familiar with the basic concepts of historical and critical discourse analysis.
In this seminar, we will look at the history of the special needs education system in Austria in order to critically reflect on its current form. To this end, we will first work on the theoretical foundations of Disability Studies and Disability History on integration and inclusion. Finally, we will look at the historical development up to the starting points of the Austrian integration movement at the end of the 1970s in order to critically reflect on current trends in the Austrian education system with regard to inclusion. To this end, we will also take a journey through the main features of historical and critical discourse analysis and analyse examples of sources together from time to time.
Input from the course instructor, joint reading and discussion of texts, independent reading of selected texts, group work and discussion, reflection, joint development and analysis of sources.
- Course with immanent examination character, regular attendance, active participation;
- Short papers and presentations (alone or in a group)
- Processing and ongoing submission of assignments in preparation for individual sessions, final submission in the form of a revised portfolio close to the end of the course;
