summer semester 2024 | Last update: 26.11.2023 | Place course on memo listThis course comprises two elements: in-class writing workshops and online asynchronous self-study learning. The overall learning objective is to prepare you to be a successful communicator in both professional and academic texts that are written for a variety of audiences.
During the in-class writing workshop sessions, we will discuss and analyse a variety of text types (genres). These discussions and our analysis will feed into the writing workshop component where a task will be set, and you will then be given the opportunity to write. The tasks will be of a creative nature, and they will enable you to develop an appropriate writing style with an emphasis on professionalism, precision, and linguistic accuracy.
The online asynchronous self-study element of the course will review and deepen your understanding of the mechanics of “good writing” and the skills necessary for academic writing.
In class content
· Drafting, revising, reviewing, and editing texts with a focus on rhetorical situation (audience, purpose, and context).
· Considering appropriate style and tone.
· Applying critical, analytical, and creative thinking.
· Developing fluency and accuracy.
Online content
· Finding and working with literature.
· Working with quotations, tables, and figures.
· Formality in academic work.
· Punctuation.
· Achieving clarity in academic work.
· Thesis moves.
Discussion of various aspects of language and in-class analysis of texts. This analysis will focus on a variety of texts with different purposes and genres,and these will provide writing prompts for your own writing.
Online asynchronous self-study.
Development of a portfolio from weekly writing and activity assignments (from the in class and online materials).
Participation (in class and online) (20%)
Weekly assignments that you develop into a portfolio (80%)
