Students gain first insights into the theories, approaches and methodologies of British and Anglophone Cultural Studies. They learn to apply these to a range of textual, socio-political and historical examples.

Topics, amongst others, include definitions of ‘Culture/ culture’ and concepts and theories of ‘Cultural Studies’; identity and difference; semiotics and representation; nationality, history, and politics; cultural analyses of space; negotiations of cultural values; selfhood and society. We will discuss a variety from media, from paitings to social media, to critically reflect on central aspects of British and Anglophone Cultural Studies.

Presentations - including contemporary sources (Memes, Internet, Youtube etc.), in-class discussions to heighten cultural awareness and critical thinking. Attendance at first session is obligatory.

Final written examination, written assignments, active participation in class.

Primary and Secondary Literature will be provided via OLAT.
