In this course on Canadian literature, you will learn about the Canadian Aboriginal residential school experience as it is reflected in literature written by First Nations, Inuit and Métis. We will discuss the colonialist ideologies that led to the development of a residential school system which was founded in the nineteenth century to assimilate Aboriginal peoples into European-Canadian society or even "kill the Indian in the child" ("Canada apologizes for 'killing the Indian in the child'"). The last residential school was closed in 1996 but the effects that these schools had on indigenous peoples continue. After a discussion of the historical and socio-political situation that led to the implementation of the residential school system, we will focus on its legacies and on the "magic weapons" that were (and can still be) used to come to terms with the individual and collective traumata this system of segregation and forced assimilation has caused. Students who would like to prepare for this course in advance should read Tomson Highway's novel KISS OF THE FUR QUEEN. It is one of the works that deals with the Canadian Aboriginal residential school experience and a literary text that we will discuss in class.
