Anglophone Cultures: Studying Aboriginality

introduction to the concept of aboriginality and different approaches to studying aboriginal cultures as well as to the problems involved in doing so

Although the term "aboriginal" may be applied to any indigenous culture, our prime focus will be on native Australians and the ways in which anthropologists, historians, cultural theorists, journalists, sociologists, postcolonial critics, writers and film makers have been dealing with their specific way of life, their cosmology, their culture, their history. We will compare a variety of texts produced mainly since the19th century with the aim to assess the possibilities and limits of comprehending aboriginality from a Western point of view, the dangers of (re)producing (racist) stereotypes in the process and the chances of cross-cultural collaboration that might exist despite these dangers. Theoretical as this may sound, there will also be space to collect concrete information about Australian Aboriginal communities and their cultures via the texts we will scrutinise.
