Owing to English colonialism and Empire-building, the relationship between the English and other nations play a central role in the works of many of the most important Anglophone novelists, from Aphra Behn and Daniel Defoe to J. M. Coetzee and Salman Rushdie. In this course we will discuss such novels by important writers from different phases of English colonialism. In our analysis of the texts we will use a modern postcolonial methodological approach. Handouts will be supplied. Audiovisual media will be used.
