Irish novelists have been very successful in recent times.
Some of the most important writers and their works will be discussed in
this seminar with special consideration being given to the
the role of Ireland in these texts.
This course will introduce students to the work of four accomplished contemporary Irish novelists, two women and two men. In examining these novels we will pay particular attention to the manner in which these writers engage with subjects such as history, postcolonialism, sectarianism, landscape, feminism, religion and varieties of Irishness. By doing close readings of key passages in these novels, we will address the narrative strategies and means of textual representation by which each novelist provides nuanced understandings of the forces impacting identity in contemporary Ireland.
Exam: Presentations, taking part in discussions, seminar paper.
The following novels will be discussed:
Colm Toibin: The Blackwater Lightship (Picador)
Bernard MacLaverty: Grace Notes (Vintage)
Edna O'Brien: House of Splendid Isolation
Deirdre Madden: One by One in the Darkness (Faber)
Texts will have to be bought (amazon is possibly the best option), to be read,
and a list of questions to be prepared will be sent to participants before classes commence.
