What is art? Is a work of art a product? Or is it a process? Does art give life a shape (Jean Anouilh)? Does art imitate life or does life imitate art (Oscar Wilde)? Can art simply be defined as anything that one can get away with (Andy Warhol)? What is the role of art, what the function of an artist in a society? In this course we will explore how Anglophone writers discuss conceptions of art and the artist within their literary works. We will analyze how definitions of art and notions of the artist have changed in the course of time, and, in comparing literary works and other forms of art, we will also deal with questions of intertextuality, intermediality, and ekphrasis. We will discuss literary works by William Shakespeare, Edward Bond, and Tom Stoppard, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Browning and Lord Alfred Tennyson, Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats and Seamus Heaney, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, Margaret Laurence, Margaret Atwood, Dionne Brand, and Tracy Chevalier.
