Covering a period of nearly seven decades, the Victorian age witnessed major transformations in practically every sphere of life and can be said to be anything but monolithic. Hence it is hard to speak of “the Victorians,” as any generalisation would be too reductive and would not do credit to the enormous diversity of the century. In this course we will discuss some of the key controversies and debates of the 19th century, while trying to establish our own definition of the “Victorian.” We will explore Victorian literature and culture by analysing texts of non-fiction, prose and poetry as well as visual art.
