To offer an overview of key concepts of Cultural Studies, focussing particularly on British and Anglophone contexts. To apply cultural analyses to highlight how Cultural Studies help give an insight into events and mentalities in both historical and contemporary Britain, while also encouraging intermedial and interdisciplinary approaches.
Areas include: What is "culture"?, identity and difference, heritage, how are cultures created and how do they affect societies/society on a worldwide and local level, geographical influences, concepts of cultures and subcultures and cultural systems. The course will blend cultural studies theory with practice.
In this course a great deal of emphasis will be laid on critical thinking and discussions. Weekly tasks will be set in advance to prepare for these discussions and regular written assignments (to be collected in a semester dossier) will underpin in-class work.
Assessment is by dossier, class participation and a 90-minute end-of-semester written exam.
Course prerequisites (obtainable at Studia): Studying Culture - A Practical Introduction (2nd ed.), J. Giles & T. Middleton, Blackwell, 2008; Britain, J. O'Driscoll, Oxford Univ. Press, 2009;
Background reading: British Civilization, J. Oakland, Routledge, 2002; British Culture, D. Christopher, Routledge, 2006
