Although this lecture course will provide a chronological account of the various periods of English literature, it will begin on the European contintent and end overseas to include both the evolution of writing as a cultural practice and the dissemination of English literacy in the wake of colonisation.

The word "material" is to indicate that the development of English literature will be explained through the concrete conditions under which writers wrote at different times and the concrete means they used to do so. I will explain how the actual size and shape of texts, the places in which people read and write, the tools they employ in the process (be it magnifying or reading glasses, pens or computers, candles or electric light) have always had a crucial influence on who produces what kind of literature for whom. Seeing this helps to understand why certain genres (e.g. the sonnet, the drama, the novel, the essay) were predominant at certain times but also why certain ideas could only develop at certain moments in the history of English culture(s).
