The aim of this course is to give an introduction to the linguistic description of spoken and written English texts.

After a brief consideration of the general differences between speech and writing, we will discuss some fundamental text-linguistic as well as discourse analytic notions (e.g. style, cohesion, coherence, intertextuality, turn-taking, adjacency pairs, etc.) and apply these and other criteria in analyses of various kinds of texts (e.g. spontaneous spoken discourse, newspaper articles, e-mails and other kinds of internet language, song lyrics, political speeches, etc.). Emphasis will also be put on the relationship between textual and pictorial elements in text-types like advertising. To round off, we will consider how textual material is decoded and understood by addressees.

Discussion and application of text/discourse/conversation analytical tools; Corpus linguistics.

Regular attendance, active participation, oral presentation, written paper.
