Present-Day and Historical English: Studying pragmatics through written texts

The seminar explores the ways in which the study of pragmatics, apparently directly related to speech, can employ written texts as samples, in order to gain insight into how written texts can also be considered examples of „interaction“.

Starting from the assumption that written texts do have „interlocutors“ in different, but comparable, ways as speech events, various text-types and various methodologies for their analysis will be examined.

Students are required to attend regularly; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory. Other requirements for positive assessment are: language proficiency, active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, a 20-min presentation and a written research paper.
