- to explore critically key aspects of contemporary and historical Scotland - to analyze socio-political identities in Scotland today - to apply critical discourse analysis to representations of 'Scottishness'
Background history to contemporary Scotland; its geography and economy: its socio-political identities; representations of Scotland and 'Scottishness' in language (Scots and Gaelic), literature (poems, dramas, short stories and ovels), film (both documentary and feature films), art ((eg. Scottish Impressionists, the 'Glasgow Boys', the Colourists), music (pipe and fiddle music, folk music, 'classical' music), sport (esp. football, rugby), among other themes.
Initial series of input talks and workshops by the lecturer, with strong workshop character. Individual presentations of negotiated topics, with follow-up paper.
Assessed: presentation, follow-up paper, poster (exhibited on Tues Jan 25 at Burns Night) : all against external assessment criteria.
Large exhibition of books on Scotland and Scottish Culture offered in each of the 4 opening sessions. Students are expected to create their own working Bibliography (and not just any superficial Webography!).
Participants are involved as co-organizers of Burns Night, the traditional celebration of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, on the occasion of his birth, Jan 25. This Burns Night, held by the Austro-British Society Tyrol, features readings from Burns' poems and songs, pipe music, the ritual of the haggis serving and toasts with whisky.
