Synchronic and/or Diachronic English Linguistics: Corpus Linguistics - Analysing the English Language

This proseminar will focus on the contribution that corpus studies can make to different subfields of linguistics and to answering linguistic research questions through the analysis of large amounts of data. Students will learn about the main corpora available for English and about how to carry out basic corpus analysis.

Students will be introduced to methodologies of corpus linguistics and carry out corpus-based research on a topic of their choice by independently analysing and evaluating data retrieved from electronic corpora. A general investigation of the topic is also required.

Requirements for positive assessment are: Regular attendance; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory. The final assessment will also be based on individual oral presentations (with handout), a research paper related to the presentation (stylesheet for linguistics available on the departmental website), active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, minor written tasks and language proficiency.

A reserve shelf (“Semesterapparat”) will be provided in the library and a select bibliography will be handed out at the beginning of term.
