This proseminar will, first of all, look at the rise of the English dictionary and give an overview of the major reference works in English lexicography (e.g. the famous 'Oxford English Dictionary' in twenty volumes, Samuel Johnson's 'Dictionary', but also Joseph Wright's 'English Dialect Dictionary', which is currently being digitised and evaluated by members of our department). Another important objective will be to devise a typology of dictionaries, i.e. to recognise the different kinds of reference works that are available. Here, we will particularly focus on monolingual learners' dictionaries but also investigate the state-of-the-art of electronic and online reference works as well as ESP dictionaries. Besides, we will consider dictionaries as lexical descriptions and evaluate how adequate they are as such. The lexicographic principle of objectivity will receive special attention in this context, as we will investigate different forms of biases, e.g. anthropocentrism and ethnocentrism. Finally, we will look at factors affecting dictionary usage: what makes a good dictionary and what a good dictionary user? Course requirements: regular attendance, active participation, minor written tasks, oral presentation, written paper (10 pages), final exam.
