Aims/Ziele: The seminar will illustrate methodologies from pragmatic stylistics that are employed to investigate fictional dialogue in conversational terms, in particular with an eye to the way in which the relation between characters is built through language. This kind of analysis draws from both dialogue studies and interactional pragmatics, and its ultimate aim is to look at ways in which „rules“ for interacting within a community are encoded in constructed texts.
Content/Inhalt: After a review of the main heuristic tools and procedures, participants will select texts that they will analyse from a pragmatic point of view, with a particular focus on „face-work“, which is at the core of Politeness Theory.
Examination mode/Prüfunsmodus: Students are required to attend regularly; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory. Other requirements for positive assessment are: language proficiency adequate to the 2nd Abschnitt level, active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, a 20-min presentation (with handout) and a written research paper (stylesheet for linguistics available on Institute’s website.
