Present-Day and Historical English: The Sociolinguistics of Post-Colonial Literature

Aims/Ziele: The seminar analyses the way in which the presence and use of English in post-colonial contexts is reflected in literary works, both as an instrument to describe social dynamics and as a means of social critique.
Content/Inhalt: After reviewing the intense debate on the choice of English as a language of literary expression in post-colonial contexts, participants will observe and analyse cases in which authors use the sociolinguistic dynamics of their community as a means to express political, social and identity values.
Examination mode/Prüfunsmodus: Students are required to attend regularly; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory. Other requirements for positive assessment are: language proficiency adequate to the 2nd Abschnitt level, active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, a 20-min presentation (with handout) and a written research paper (stylesheet for linguistics available on Institute’s website.
