The present phase of Black British culture has been described as a Renaissance which will come to equal that of Harlem. In the world of the theatre the Black – and South Asian – presence is increasingly visible at the country’s major theatrical institutions. Kwame Kwei-Armah’s plays Elmina’s Kitchen and Fix Up have been produced at the National Theatre as has Roy Williams’s Sing Yer Heart out for the Lads. As both writers and performers, Black and South Asian people are now finding their rightful place in contemporary British theatre. This process is a result of the transformation of Britain into a multicultural society and is changing our ideas about both British theatre and Britishness.
This course will be concerned with the theatrical representation of the cultural diversity of modern Britain. We will be looking at the theatrical practice of Black and South Asian British people, the innovative, intercultural modes of performance they adopt and the new aesthetics they are developing. Social and political issues addressed in their work such as migration, diaspora, ethnicity, gender, marginalisation, urban violence and the war in Iraq will form a particular focus. The plays to be discussed will be Kwame Kwei-Armah’s Elmina’s Kitchen, Roy Williams’s Fallout and Days of Significance, Tanika Gupta’s Fragile Land and White Boy, and Ayub Khan-Din’s East is East.
