- to create a basis for an in-depth analysis of various literary and non-literary texts by New Zealand writers; - to encourage students to think critically as well as to present and defend their own viewpoints; - to familiarise students with the necessary tools (theories, methodologies) for the analysis of literary texts and other cultural products; - to support students in applying these tools in their analysis of literary texts and other cultural products;
As the title of this proseminar already indicates reaching New Zealand, or Aotearoa as the Maori call it, has not only been the aim of thousands of settlers ever since the early 19th century. Arriving in the “Land of the Long White Cloud” has also been a central feature of New Zealand literature and culture from early colonial times to the present, in a literal as well as in a metaphorical sense. Settler- as well as indigenous texts have been dealing with this topic, though naturally from very different angles. Whereas for writers of European background New Zealand often features as adventurous, uncharted territory or also as second rate civilisation, Maori writers increasingly attempt to reclaim their homeland and its culture from the claws of colonisation. Hence, we will look at a variety of texts, literary and non-literary, from different periods to gain an insight into the strategies deployed and their effects on the specific cultural products.
