From text to task • gaining insights into the Austrian standardised school-leaving exam • choosing literary texts appropriate for use in the classroom • producing lesson plans and teaching materials based on literary texts • assessing writing competence aiming at a B1/B2 level • working with experienced teachers from schools

This course is funded by the BIFIE (Bundesinstitut für Bildungsforschung, Innovation und Entwicklung des Österreichischen Schulwesens) and aims to look into how a selection of literary texts on cultural encounters can be applied to a classroom setting and how writing competence can be tested in a writing exam based on literary texts and tasks. By the end of the course students will have chosen literary texts to work with, produced teaching materials, and put together writing tasks according to the competence-oriented standardized Austrian Matura. Selected works will be published on the BIFIE website.

This course will be held in workshop mode and is very much focussed on a principled learning by doing approach. You will be required to have a good working knowledge of the CEFR, as you will be focussing on B1/B2 level while you work individually and in small groups on a number of texts. The completion of the introductory didactics module (especially the workshop) is strongly recommended. External expert trainers will be invited from the field of language testing, the PH and in-service teachers.

Literary Canon I: Cultural Encounters CEFR (Common European Framework of References) Participants create their own bibliography

Numbers will be limited due to the practical nature of the course.
