This course will develop reading and writing skills at C2 and C2+ levels. Writing tasks will include a static description, an interpretive essay, and a comparison/contrast essay. We will focus on the development of strong thesis statements, organization, coherence, and style. Students who enroll in this course should expect to devote ample time to it. The following topics will be covered in this course: • Close Reading Skills • How to Structure an Argument • Thesis Statements • Nonfinite Clauses • Theme and Focus • Error Detection and Correction You are expected to have already mastered the following areas: • Sentence Elements and Sentence Structure • Paragraphing (unity, coherence, cohesion) • Punctuation (commas, colons, semi-colons) • Relative Clauses • Subordination and Coordination • Summarizing • Formal and Informal Letters For those of you who need to review these topics, I will point you to the appropriate materials.
