English Linguistics and Culture: Language Planning in English-speaking contexts

This seminar will bring participants to develop an awareness of the role of language planning in countries where English plays a major role as first, second or additional language, and particularly in post-colonial contexts.

Apart from reviewing some aspects of language planning and of language policies in general, participants will be required to investigate specific situations related to individual countries or areas in which the presence of English has been the object of debate in relation to language policy and language planning issues.

Focussed readings + discussions, regular updating on individual research work will be a major part of the sessions.

Students will have to write a seminar paper (about 6,000 words) on their own case-study, on which they will also be required to organise a 20-minute presentation. Assessment will be based on: regular attendance (max two sessions can be missed, presence at the first session mandatory), language level adequate to the 2nd Abschnitt, knowledge of background literature, active participation in in-session discussion, accuracy of the case study presented.
