This seminar will

• repeat the basic concpets of narratology
• introduce students to post-colonial histories, theories and discourses
• introduce British and Anglophone literary texts and their post-colonial rewrites
• introduce not only British and Anglophone literary histories but also highlight approaches to (de-)constructing underlying ideologies

This seminar will introduce students to the fascinating relationship between canonized British and Anglophone texts and their post-colonial revisions and narrative re-imaginations. These challenge colonial ideologies and discourses and probe notions of identity, culture, self and other and the importance and limits of language.

On the one hand, this seminar will introduce texts, such as the Illiad, The Tempest, Robinson Crusoe or Heart of Darkness – to name but a few. On the other hand, students will engage with post-colonial rewrites such as Omeros, The Hagseed, Foe and Things Fall Apart. After an introduction to narrative terminology and post-colonial theory this lecture will provide close readings of a variety of mainly narrative genres and texts to question not only the construction of (literary) canons in particular but also historiography in general.
