To introduce students to (some of) the literary and cinematic responses to the inter-communal conflict in Northern Ireland and to instigate critical reflection on the profound impact of the 'Troubles' on contemporary (Anglo-)Irish literature and cinema.
How do people come to terms with a violent past? How can literature bridge the gaping chasm between rival groups and help heal a divided society? This course traces the historical roots of the 'Troubles' and sheds light on questions of identity, representation, commemoration and reconciliation in (Anglo-)Irish poetry, drama, short fiction, life writing, music and film.
