Suffering is an inevitable part of human existence: We suffer from physical and psychological pain, we suffer from illness and disease, we suffer when mourning or coming to terms with other hardships in life, we have to deal with death – the death of others – before we are ultimately faced with our own dying and death. This seminar intends to analyse various pieces of American literature that deal with such topics. The aim is to see how these “negative” aspects can be and are meaningfully integrated into human existence as a whole so that they "make sense" after all. Special emphasis will thereby be given to various ethnic groups in America.
