American Literature: A Mere Story Told: A Narratological Introduction to Literature and Film

How do you tell a story? A seemingly simple question, though, not so easy to answer. This course is designed as an introduction to the field of narratology, i.e. the theory and study of narrative and narrative structure. Starting with Aristotle’s Poetics, we will go on discussing the basic narrative principles as established by modern narratologists, such as Gerard Genette, Paul Ricoeur, Roland Barthes, and Seymour Chatman. In your presentations you will be asked to put theory into practice, in other words, analyze specific novels, plays, as well as, films. Compulsory readings and viewings include (but are not limited to) Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994), and Christopher Nolan’s Memento (2000).
