What is funny, when, and why? This course will attempt to trace American culture by looking at popular comedy outlets – in literature, film, and television. Besides discussing the manner and form of how to ‘be funny’, the issue of taboos in comedy will be raised. What are the conventions? Why is not everybody ‘allowed’ to make fun of everything? Or are we? Topics discussed will include (but are not limited to): Late Night Talk Shows (with hosts such as Conan O’Brien and Jon Stewart), Saturday Night Live, Woody Allen’s short stories, Pixar Films, Inglourious Basterds, Sitcoms, and Stand-Up Comedy.
