The goal is for students to learn about the origins and development of the literary genre of the short story and to understand the individuality and uniqueness of the various short story writers by analyzing and interpreting some of their stories.

The Proseminar seeks to investigate the development of the American short story from its beginnings to Modernism by analyzing individual stories by major writers of this time period. The goal is to both trace the theoretical background of the American short story and to highlight the shift of emphasis by looking at the various major short story writers, their intentions in writing, their themes, their style, and their narrative strategies.
