This seminar will first take a look at the history, meaning, and intention of the Nobel Prize, and will then focus on the American Nobel Prize winners in literature, such as Hemingway, Faulkner, O'Neill, Morrison, et. al., and concentrate on their messages. The focus will be both on the investigation into their meaning at the time and their relevance for our time. Students will be asked to choose and deal in detail with one of each author's literary piece which they consider representative in this reguard.
Participation in class; presentation of paper; written paper (15-20 pages)
