The intention of this seminar is to provide insight into the legal system of the US and to discuss various legal issues and their cultural implications on the basis of literary and film texts. After a brief introduction to the history of law in the US, the focus of this seminar will be on the discussion of various aspects of crime and justice. Among the issues discussed will be the death penalty, the jury system, the role of the sheriff in the "Wild West," methods of criminal investigation, etc. A major source for the various analyses will be movies and TV series such as CSI, Law and Order, Criminal Intent, Medical Detectives, et al.
Participation in class; presentation of paper; written paper (15-20 pages)
