Whether you love poetry or loathe it – you should find out! Poetry is arguably the least accessible yet probably the most expressive, beautiful, and even enjoyable literary format. This course is designed as an introductory course to American poetry, which provides pathways to understanding and making the most of poetry. We will look at stylistic features, analyze contents, and put authors and literary pieces in their respective cultural contexts. The course will take us all the way from ‘celebrated selves’ (Walt Whitman) to ‘deferred dreams’ (Langston Hughes), ‘dwelling possibilities’ (Emily Dickinson), ‘falling leaves’ (E.E. Cummings), and ‘roads not taken’ (Robert Frost).
lecture inputs, presentations, group discussions
