American Literature: American Frontiers: Poetry and Painting in the last 150 years

The aim of this course is to gain insight into the artistic practice of major American poets from Walt Whitman to the present, accompanied by an examination of paintings by American artists, noting correspondences between the poetic line and the practice of visual art.

Questions that we will explore include: How does the frontier of the American poetic line change over time? How is the American landscape portrayed in verse and in painting? The course will familiarize the students with key poems and paintings of the last 150 years and enable them to discern and analyze significant correspondences between the arts. We will study how artists and writers broke free from or altered the literary and artistic traditions that preceded them. Works discussed will include the poetry of Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot, Marianne Moore, Robert Lowell, Elizabeth Bishop, John Ashbery and Fanny Howe; paintings by Frederick E. Church, Albert Bierstadt, George C. Bingham, Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, Jackson Pollock and more.
