To become familiar with major developments in American film history, to achieve proficiency in the use of film language and to develop interpretative skills.
This course offers a historical survey of the development of American film from its silent beginnings to the beginning of sound. It aims to introduce principles and techniques of cinematic art as generated in the history of American cinema and to provide an understanding of the evolution of film language during the transition from silent film to the coming of sound.
Introductory lecture input, oral presentations, film analysis and discussions
Active participation, oral presentation; analysis of a short film sequence, research paper (10-15 pages)
Recommended introductory reading: Thompson, Kristin, and David Bordwell. _Film History: An Introduction_. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1994.
Students must have passed the "Introduction to American Literature and Culture" to attend this course
