This series of lectures will examine the works of Mark Twain, from _The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County_ (1867) to _The Mysterious Stranger_ (1902-1904). Its theme is the way Twain’s works allegorize the search for what Derrida calls _le tout autre_ (“the completely other”). Over the course of the lectures, a variety of critical approaches to Twain will be summarized and assessed—from early examples of New Criticism to the more recent work of cultural critics, new historicists, and “new Americanists.” These critical controversies touch on contemporary issues of cultural hegemony, hermeneutics, canon-formation, and literary periodization that are addressed in Twain’s works. Some attention will be paid to the illustrations of Twain’s works, to Twain’s interest in Austrian affairs, and to Theodor Adorno’s _Der Schatz des Indianer-Joe_.
lecture
Short oral examinations will be held at the end of the series of lectures.
A list of the works by Mark Twain will be handed out in class.
