A good author is not necessarily a dead author. This course focuses on contemporary, living American authors, whose works belong to the (extended) literary canon. After an introductory overview of the 20th and 21st century literary scene in the USA, we will look at chosen authors and their careers and analyze their prose, plays, and poetry. Authors to be discussed will include Edward Albee, Maya Angelou, Gail Godwin, Jorie Graham, Maxine Hong Kingston, Norman Mailer, Toni Morrison, Bharati Mukherjee, Joyce Carol Oates, and John Updike.
