This course is designed to contextualize American History by means of historical and literary texts. The close reading of texts from major epochs in the history of the USA should lead to a more comprehensive understanding of contemporary American culture. This historical exploration starts with the discovery of the American continent, the early colonial period, and America's way to independence. Chronologically, we will then move on to American Transcendentalism, the Civil War and 20th century American history up to 9/11. Also the voices of Native Americans, Afro-Americans, and Feminists will be considered.
