Students will be able to utilize key terms from film and television analysis (eg: genre, gaze, frame, lighting, editing, set design, sound design, mise-en-scène), visual art analysis (eg: light/shadow, foreground/background, perspective, composition, texture, tone), literary analysis (eg: narrative voice, descriptive language, character, plot), and new media studies (eg: hypertext, forms of interactivity).
Students will be able to apply their knowledge of media analysis independently, by analyzing specific works as well as comparing and contrasting works across media.
This course introduces students to methods of critically analyzing print media, film, visual art, and new media, with a focus on applied media analysis. Specifically, this course uses gender as an analytic lens. Students will examine representations of gender in select examples of literature, film and television, music, and visual art, as well as in advertisements and select social media posts. We will consider how a particular medium might inform gender representation as well as how our attention to gender representation helps to illuminate the meaning of a given work.
