Much has been written about the ongoing struggle of the ethnic minorities to find a balance between assimilation and ethnic integrity within the dominant white Protestant American culture. This course views a minority within the ethnic cultural struggle which has been making itself heard ever more strongly in the last decades--that is the female voice, a voice marginalized not only through race and class, but above all through gender. This semester we will focus on the Native American women writers and the Hispanic women writers, two ethnic cultures which show a rich diversity and also share certain common historical roots. We will aim to understand the special situation and contributions of these two female groups, both socio-historically and from a literary standpoint. Texts will be not only primary literature (poetry, drama, prose fiction) but also material dealing with the historical, social, and cultural background.
In-class workshop, presentation, term paper, participation in class, final exam
Students must have passed the "Introduction to American Literature and Culture" to attend this course
