To acquire an overview of American culture and establish a working understanding of key aspects of Cultural Studies.

The course serves as an introduction to American cultural studies with a focus on American media. We will explore approaches to American culture and survey basic theoretical cultural and media-related concepts. There is a strong practical component to the course where students are expected to critically examine cultural concepts and to analyze examples from print, film, and the new media.

Primary sources and selected secondary sources will be made available at the beginning of the semester.
