Edgar Allan Poe argued that the most poetic theme is the death of a beautiful woman. When we look at American fiction it seems that quite a few beautiful women have to die in order to provide the "most poetic theme". In the proseminar we will discuss and analyze pieces of American short fiction that emphasize this topic. Elisabeth Bronfen's book "Over Her Dead Body" will provide one of the major scholarly sources for investigating the topic.
