Emerging as an independent literary form in the early 19th century, the short story has established itself as one of the most fascinating and diverse genres in American literature. In this course we will explore major elements and characteristics of this genre in general and then look at a collection of 19th- and 20th-century landmark short stories by some of the greatest American writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Flannery O’Connor, Katherine Ann Porter, and Saul Bellow. Themes in the stories will include self-discovery, initiation, cultural and regional differences, and race and gender issues.
