"We are all New Yorkers” and “We are all Americans today” (Le Monde) were the first world-wide reactions to the 9/11 assault on the World Trade Center in New York. Paul Auster noted down on the same day at 4 p.m. that “the consequences of this assault will no doubt be terrible.” Within two years the view of the United States as a victim of terrorism deserving the world’s sympathy changed to a widespread vision of America as an imperial power that has defied world opinion through unjustified and unilateral use of force and divided the world into those who are “with us” and those who are “with the terrorists” (G. W. Bush). We want to look at the reactions to the momentous event in the media, in films, songs, literature and trace the overall political consequences, which resulted in a changed America (“America will never be the same” Senator Dianne Feinstein) and, indeed, a changed world.
