The Theme of Nature in American Literature and Culture

The course will start out from a general discussion of the theme and its cultural and theoretical connotations and then concentrate on the analysis of a number of crucial texts, works of art, and films.

Reading of the texts and viewing of the films in class; participation in class discussions, an 18-20 page paper and a 2-3 page handout. 15 minutes presentation in class; two appointments with the course leader.

Ralph W. Emerson, Henry D. Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Margaret Atwood, Leslie M. Silko, Gary Snyder and Edward Abbey. Films: "Koyanisqaatsi", "Playing in the Fields of the Lord", and "A River Runs Through It".
