The course will start out from a general discussion of the theme and its cultural and theoretical connotations and then concentrate on a number of crucial and representative texts, films, and works of visual art.
Reading of the texts and viewing of the films in class; participation in class and group discussions, a 15-page paper in English and a 2- page handout (one week in advance of class presentation). 15-minute presentation in class; two appointments with the course leader.

Edgar Lee Masters, Sherwood Anderson, Sinclair Lewis, William Faulkner, Robert Penn Warren, John Updike, Garrison Keillor as well as a number of expository texts. Films: "The Last Picture Show", "What’s Eating Gilbert Grape"
Students must have passed the "Introduction to American Literature and Culture" to attend this course
