This proseminar will mainly deal with European views of America from the early travelers to 9/11, i. e. outside perceptions of America as “a saviour or a satan” in a historical perspective. It will trace the ideas, fantasies, and misconceptions which the Old World formed about the New World in different historical periods. This continued fascination of Europe with America has again and again been shaped by an ambiguous pattern of hopes and fears, dreams and nightmares. To a lesser degree the course will include American perceptions of (“Old”) Europe from the other side of the Atlantic.
Finding relevant information/material; writing a research paper; effective presentation of a paper; developing debating skills within the peer group.
Short lecture inputs; student presentations; discussion; final exam.
