(either for Film & Media Studies – elective or module – or for American Culture) to investigate the New York film industry and film world in their development from early American cinema till today; to take a closer look at Woody Allen's films from various perspectives and compare his work with other New York filmmakers like Shirley Clarke, Maya Deren, Hal Hartley, Spike Lee, Sidney Lumet, Martin Scorsese; to study the themes and film techniques in close analyses of sequences, shots and frames from the films under discussion.
Project with presentation, film-viewing out of class, film analysis, group work, class discussion, either a 10-page research paper OR a film with storyboard, script, and short essay
written and oral
American Studies students who want credit for Cultural Studies must have passed the "Introduction to American Literature and Culture". All participants should have had some sort of experience with film analysis
